How Terry Chiropractic Eliminates Headaches | Chiropractor in Boulder, CO
Dr. Duff here, and today we’re going to talk about some of the common causes of headaches and migraines. So here in our office, we assess things like headaches and migraines by looking at a number of things.
A Common Origin of Headaches is the Cervical Spine
One is going to be the head position and the spine. Another one is going to be the muscles and tendons and ligaments around the spine as well. And three is going to be assessing the nervous system, because many of the headaches that are are caused in our bodies and in our spines, contrary to what some doctors and some people believe, actually do originate from the cervical spine. They’re called cervicogenic, headaches, cervical meaning the neck area of the spine, and Jenna coming, that’s where that pain is generated from cervicogenic headaches can cause tension across the temples, it can cause pain in the forehead in between the eyes, and also pain on the suboccipital muscles and almost feel like there’s a band around the head. These types of headaches can be caused from the spine. So one of the things that we’ll look at is identify where those misalignments or postural deviations are in the spine. These are called subluxations. And subluxations are these misalignments that cause irritation in the muscles and the joints and in the nerves that surround the skeletal structure.
Misalignments and Subluxations and How We Treat Them
In science, we know that the brain controls all the functions in the body by sending electrical impulses and signals down through the spinal cord, which goes through our vertebral canal, out through the nerves to every single cell tissue gland, organ and system of your body. So it’s controlling everything. And when we become misaligned, or we have these subluxations that are caused by either stresses over time, like bad posture, or injuries, like a car wreck is the spine can actually shift out of its normal position, interfering with that communication and that energy, kind of like putting a dimmer switch on the wall and turning it way down. The energy can’t get through as well. And it can irritate the nerves and create inflammation. And these are the nerves that go back up to the head. And it can cause things like tension in the muscles, visual disturbances, brain fog and lack of mental alertness and things of that variety. In our office, the way that we assess for headaches and these misalignments of the spine is by doing an examination, we’re going to assess the motion of that area. We’re also going to do certain orthopedic and neurological assessments. And then we’ll also check posture evaluations. And if necessary, we can even take an x ray of the spine to get a closer look and see where the misalignments are to give you the best help going forward.
If you are experiencing headaches, or migraines or pain anywhere in the head, face, temple or skull, then the best thing to do is schedule an appointment with a doctor. And the way that we do it here that’s different from medical doctors and neurologists is by going through a comprehensive evaluation to attack from all angles to see what the root cause of those headaches are, so that we can take the pressure off and so that you can get back to living your normal life.
