Maintaining an effective exercise schedule takes true commitment. Often one of the main reasons dedication to exercise wanes is a lack of motivation. One of the most effective ways to stay motivated is with a partner!
Working out or doing light exercise with a partner is a sure fire way to increase motivation which boosts your performance level and over time leads to sustained results. Exercising with the right partner can help you push through that last rep or take that walk just a quarter of a mile further. They can help you give it your all so that you get the best results from the time and effort you are putting into your commitment to exercise.
1. You have similar fitness goals. This is important to determine from the outset. If your proposed partner is interested in building muscle and prefers a strength – training routine focusing on maximizing strength , but you are interested in endurance training, which requires long distances building heart and lung endurance then, you are not a good exercise partner fit. Endurance athletes focus on high level of performance over a long period of time, whereas a strength athlete seeks to create an explosive strength utilizing maximum weights and short bursts with low repetition. For over 60 athletes, your idea of a fitness routine may be a 2 mile walk outdoors, but your partner prefers to briskly walk a couple of laps around the local mall, you are not a good fit. Look for a suitable partner who is interested in meeting the same fitness goals you have.
2. You have flexible or semi similar work out schedules. In order for your partnership to work well you must be able to meet at the same time several times a week. Most people find that early mornings are the easiest time slots to fit into the busy schedule of every day life. But whatever time you choose, make sure that you can be consistent and meet your partner regularly.
3. You have a good relationship outside of your exercise routine. Choose a partner with whom you have an easy going rapport. If you have only met the person a few times in the gym or on the walking trail you may not yet know if you have much in common to keep the motivation going.
4. He or she has good attitude. You want a partner with a “stick to it” style. You want to know that even when you feel like giving up, your partner is going to stick with you. In your weak moments of feeling tired and unmotivated, or even when you are trying to push through a plateau, you want your partner to talk seriously and keep you focused on your fitness goals. This role will switch back and forth over the course of your fitness
